Portable Generator VS. Standby Generator

What is the difference between a portable generator or a standby generator? A portable generator is a generator that typically sits on wheels and can be rolled out onto the driveway and equipped with extension cords to provide temporary power. They’re generally gasoline powered. A standby generator will be installed by a member of our team as a permanent fixture that’s hardwired into your home’s electrical panel. It senses when you’ve lost power and comes on automatically. A standby generator is always on “standby”, ready to provide power when needed. They’re typically powered by propane or natural gas.

Portable generators can be a great way to get some back-up power, but they come with some drawbacks. You have to keep fresh gasoline on hand. They’re heavy and clunky and must be pulled outside to operate. Each time there’s an outage you have to run multiple extension cords. And probably the worst feature of a portable generator, you have to manually start it once you’ve already lost power.

This becomes troublesome when the generator caretaker isn’t home during an outage or when the outage happens in the middle of the night.

The Generator Guys are on a mission to offer safety and comfort to the community. Once fully installed, Generac’s standby generators come on AUTOMATICALLY which means you do nothing. If you lose power in the middle of the night or while you’re vacationing out of state, the generator does all the work. Usually, a standby automatic generator takes a few seconds to start after power goes out. Once power is restored, the generator safely transfers the power back to your utility company.

Who needs a Generac generator?

We’ve had customers come to us frustrated with the loss of hundreds of dollars of frozen meat that didn’t survive an extended outage. One customer had a newly renovated basement that was ruined after the sump pump failed to operate once its battery back-up ran out.

We have families where the husband is frequently out of town. They like not having to worry about the wife and children at home alone. If a storm hits, they know they’ll have power.

And one of the most obvious reasons to install a Generac automatic generator in their Delaware & Maryland homes, is for the individual who’s elderly or has medical needs that simply require back-up power. Without it, they may be looking at a trip to the hospital during a raging storm.

A standby generator is really for anyone who wants to have security and peace of mind of knowing they’ll have electricity in the event of a power outage, whether for convenience or necessity.
